So what's the latest wisdom in nutrition? Oat bran? Cod liver oil? Broccoli? Just say no?

Nutrition has lately been a source of some wonderful pop culture as well as plenty of misinformation. It seems that every time the TV news runs into a slow news day, you can be treated to the latest in miracle diets to lengthen your life or improve your mood. The question is, how much of this stuff is real?

You should know that there may be a lot of truth in these ideas. The right diet could lower your cholesterol, your blood pressure, and your risk for certain cancers.

Fiber has been a dietary holy grail for over a decade now. According to sports nutritionist Ellen Coleman, RD, of the Sports Clinic, Riverside, California, "a high fiber diet may also help to prevent diverticular disease, colon cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease."
